The Importance of Staying Hydrated: Benefits of
Drinking Water

Hydration

We’ve all been told to drink more water and to stay hydrated (especially when we’re running and exercising) but what actually are the health benefits of drinking water?  Carry on reading to find out more.

What does water do for our bodies?

We all know it’s important, but why do we need water? Well, for starters think of it like this: water contributes to the maintenance of normal cognitive function, which is important for a range of things including focusing and remembering things and helping you keep healthy through your day.  Basically, water is a crucial player in keeping us physically and mentally healthy. Nobody wants to feel sluggish or foggy-headed, right? So, staying hydrated is key!

Water and Your Brain: Maintaining Normal Cognitive Function

Staying hydrated is important for overall health, and it plays a key role in supporting the maintenance of normal cognitive function.  This includes several areas such as attention, focus and memory.

  • Maintaining good hydration habits can support these cognitive abilities, contributing to your overall well-being.

Water and Physical Function: Supporting Normal Performance

For normal physical performance, staying hydrated is key. Water contributes to the maintenance of normal physical functions, including thermoregulation. Basically, water helps your body maintain a normal temperature through sweating – which is super important when you're active or it's hot out. So, staying hydrated helps support these normal physical processes and keeps you feeling good.

How do I stay hydrated? Daily Water Requirement

We should aim for 2.5 litres of water a day, on average which can include natural mineral water and spring water. However, it’s also suggested that your water intake and specific needs vary based on your physical activity, your lifestyle habits and more. For instance, athletes who strenuously work out will require far more water on a daily basis than someone who lives a more sedentary lifestyle. For runners, think about how much you sweat or if you live or are on holiday in a hot country and adjust your water intake accordingly.
